Good Faith Estimate — Your Right to Know the Expected Cost of Therapy
A plain-language explanation of your rights under the No Surprises Act and how we comply with it at Minds in Action Counseling
Under the federal No Surprises Act, which took effect January 1, 2022, you have the right to receive a written Good Faith Estimate of the expected cost of your therapy services before your first session if you are uninsured or if you choose not to use your health insurance for your care.
A Good Faith Estimate is not a contract or a guarantee of the exact cost of your treatment. It is an estimate of the costs that are reasonably expected based on your situation, the services planned, and the duration of treatment. The actual cost of your care may be higher or lower than the estimate depending on how your treatment evolves over time.
Who Is Entitled to a Good Faith Estimate?
You are entitled to request and receive a Good Faith Estimate if you are uninsured or if you are a client with insurance who chooses not to use your insurance benefits for therapy. If you plan to use your insurance, your financial responsibility is determined by your plan’s benefits (copays, deductible, coinsurance), which we verify before your first session and communicate to you directly.
You may request a Good Faith Estimate at any time — before scheduling, before your first session, or at any point during your treatment.
What the Estimate Covers
Our Good Faith Estimates include the expected number of therapy sessions over a defined period, the session rate for your specific therapist, the total estimated cost for the defined period based on those figures, and relevant billing codes. We provide this information in writing before your first session and update it if your treatment plan changes significantly.
Because therapy is an adaptive process, the actual number of sessions you attend may differ from the estimate. We revisit treatment duration regularly and communicate transparently about the ongoing expected cost of care.
Current Session Rates for Good Faith Estimate Purposes
The following rates apply to private-pay (uninsured or self-pay) individual therapy sessions at Minds in Action Counseling:
| Therapist Level | Rate per 50-Minute Session |
|---|---|
LPC-Supervisor (LPC-S) | $225 |
PhD-Level LPC | $190 |
Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) | $160 |
LPC-Associate | $120 |
Couples therapy rates range from $160 to $225 per initial session (per spouse) and $190 to $300 per ongoing session depending on therapist and session length. Biosound Therapy sessions are $80 (or $39 for first-time clients).
Your Rights Under the No Surprises Act
If you receive a bill that is substantially in excess of the Good Faith Estimate you were provided (generally defined as $400 or more above the estimate), you have the right to dispute the bill. You can contact us directly to discuss the discrepancy. You may also submit a complaint through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) at cms.gov or by calling 1-800-985-3059.
We are committed to transparent billing and will work with you directly to resolve any discrepancy between your estimate and your actual bill.
How to Request a Good Faith Estimate
You can request a Good Faith Estimate at any point before or during your treatment by contacting us at 469-214-5111 or through our website contact form. We will provide your estimate in writing within three business days of your request, or before your first session if you are a new client — whichever comes first.
We are happy to answer any questions about your estimate or your rights under the No Surprises Act. Transparency about cost is something we take seriously, and we want you to begin therapy without financial uncertainty as an additional source of stress.
Frequently Asked Questions About Good Faith Estimates
Does receiving a Good Faith Estimate mean I am committing to that number of sessions?
No. A Good Faith Estimate is a planning document, not a contract. You can choose to attend more or fewer sessions than estimated based on your own goals and progress. The estimate is designed to give you a reasonable financial picture, not to bind you to a specific course of treatment.
What if my insurance situation changes after I start therapy?
If you begin therapy as a self-pay client and later gain insurance, or if your insurance situation changes in any other way, please let us know. We will verify your new benefits and update your billing approach accordingly. A new Good Faith Estimate can be provided to reflect any changes.
Does this apply to Biosound Therapy?
Good Faith Estimate requirements apply to health care providers delivering health care services. As a holistic wellness service, Biosound Therapy operates outside the traditional healthcare billing framework. However, we provide full pricing transparency for Biosound Therapy upfront, and the cost of your sessions is the same regardless of whether you have insurance.
